First Lady Laura Bush predicted yesterday the U.S. will soon have a female President and held out hope Secretary of State Rice will change her mind and run for the White House.
Asked about other potential female candidates in a CNN interview, Bush pointedly ignored the question in an apparent snub of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), who is salivating at the chance to return to the White House - this time in the lead role.
On the eve of her trip to the inauguration of Liberia's first female President, Bush said the time is right for a female commander in chief here in the U.S. - as long as she's a Republican.
"I think it will happen for sure. I think it will happen probably in the next few terms of the presidency in the United States," she said.
"Of course, a Republican woman, like maybe Dr. Rice," she added with a giggle and a smile.
It's not the first time Bush has stumped for Rice, considered the brainy rock star of the Bush administration who is liked even by many Democrats, polls have shown.
But so far Rice plans to return to her ivory tower sanctuary at Stanford University and has dreams about someday becoming commissioner of the National Football League.
Rice's top State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, indicated she still has no desire to run for President. "The secretary has spoken to this issue many times before," McCormack said.
Bush is well aware that Rice doesn't want to run at this point, but apparently she hasn't written off the possibility Rice will change her mind. "She says she definitely is not running," Bush said. "I'd love to see her run. She's terrific."
Rice will join Bush in the official delegation for President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's inauguration Monday.
Clinton's camp was mum about Bush's comments or the potential of the senator facing Rice. "No comment," said spokeswoman Ann Lewis. "Thanks for asking."
In nearly every recent 2008 presidential poll, Clinton tops Rice but loses to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) or ex-Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
