Meteorologist, Surgeon Win Top China's Science Awards

    President Hu Jintao awarded the certificates and 5 million yuan (US$620,000) to the two scientists each -- Ye Duzheng, an scientist from Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Atmospheric Physics, and Wu Mengchao, president of Shanghai-based Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital -- at the Fourth National Conference on Science and Technology opened today in Beijing.

    Ye, 90 and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is one of the pioneer scientists in the atmospheric science in China. He graduated from the Tsinghua University in 1940 and received PhD degree in 1948 from University of Chicago, US. He came back to his motherland in 1950. Since the late 1970s, Ye has been engaged in research on the earth-atmospheric relationship and global variation.

    Wu, 84 and also a CAS member, is regarded as a founder of China's liver and gallbladder surgery. He graduated from the Medical School of Shanghai Tongji University in 1949. Many methods and theories of liver and gallbladder surgery created by Wu are widely practiced in China up to now.
