NASA Buys $19-Million Russia-built Space Toilet for ISS

space toilet The space station toilet physically resembles those used on Earth, except it has leg restraints and thigh bars to keep astronauts and cosmonauts in place. Fans suck waste into the commode. Crew members also have individual urine funnels which are attached to hoses, and the urine is deposited into a wastewater tank.

The cost to build a space toilet is astronomically different from building a normal one for our daily life, but very much like building a municipal treatment center on Earth.

So by paying 19 million U.S.dollars for a Russian-built international space station toilet system, NASA still feels it a bargain compared to building their own from scratch.

The new toilet that can transfer human urine to drinking water after being attached to a U.S.-made filtering system will go on the International Space Station in 2008, which currently has only one toilet in Russian side for a combined crew of three from US and Russia.

As the new RSC Energia-made loo costing NASA much money will be installed on the American side of ISS, famous bloggers such as those on Gizmodo have already begun to call  Doesn't Let Russians Use It, :-)
