Back in May 19th of 1983, the bad girl next door Elizabeth Diane Downs from Phoenix of Arizona tried to shoot her three Children, daughters Christie Downs (8), Cheryl Downs (7) and son Danny Downs (3) while they lay sleeping in her red Nissan car on a dark road in Williamette Valley, Oregon. The shootings severely injured Christie and Danny while killed Cheryl. Renowned American crime writer Ann Rule detailed the crimes in her 1987 book Small Sacrifices which was made into a mini-series starring Farrah Fawcett and John Shea. Recently, Oprah Winfray interviewed Diane Downs, the woman serving the life plus 65 years in prison still strongly denied her wrongdoings. Oprah: Can you tell us what happened on the night of May 19th, 1983?
Diane: My children and I went to see a friend to show her a newspaper clip. On the way home, a stranger was in the road. I stopped because he was flagging me and I thought he was in trouble or that he was hurt. When I stopped, he approached the car and by the time I got out of the way, he was standing beside the car and he assaulted us...I took the kids to the hospital.Why Diane Escaped From Prison
Oprah: When you escaped in July, where were going?
Diane: There was a suspect that the police knew about who fit the description, had a history of assaulting women and children, had been arrested...I ended up picking him out of a photo lineup. They didn't tell me that this was him....I was going to find him.
Oprah: But you ended up at the home of an inmate's husband ten days later...The Girl Next Door Gone Bad?
Oprah: In addition to being accused of shooting your three children, you were always sleeping with everyone else's husband, always preferred married men...You befriend an inmate, you escape from prison and you go move in with the inmate's husband ... You look like the girl next door, but the girl next door looks like she's turned bad.
Diane: "uite frankly, the girl next door is doing a lot of the same things I did.
