Ike Turner (picture above), the bandleader whose pioneering work in the development of rock 'n' roll was eclipsed by accusations of physical abuse by his former wife and musical partner, Tina Turner (picture below, via), has died, Bloomberg cited AP as reporting. He was 76.
Turner died peacefully at his home in San Marcos near San Diego, his manager, Scott Hanover confirmed to AFP.
As a rhythm-and-blues pianist and guitarist in the 1950s, Ike Turner helped lay the groundwork for rock 'n' roll. His band's recording of ``Rocket 88'' (Youtube video below)in 1951, under the name Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, is considered by many critics to be the first rock 'n' roll song.
