Malaysia ID Has One-year Guarantee

My-Kad, or Malaysian Government Multipurpose Card (GMPC) , is is regarded as the world's first smart identity card. It is the official identity for Malaysian nationals and only now has one-year guarantee for its possible compromises with the exemption from paying a RM40 replacement fee . Snips from the Star:
Admitting that the early batches of the card might have had some problems, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho said they had since been rectified and improved.

“Since 2001, we have had only 260 faulty MyKad,” he said at a function here yesterday.

Tan was responding to complaints by MyKad holders who found their cards to be defective.

One MyKad holder claimed that his photograph was fading even though it was “brand-new”, adding that he had taken care of his card.

Tan said that the guarantee period was a year and if cardholders, during that time, had any “genuine problems”, they could have their cards replaced.

“But any replacement after the one-year guarantee period is subject to a fee of RM40,” he said.
