A Look At Intel's Quad-Core Processors
The first systems powered by dual-core processors are just now going mainstream, and manufacturers are already thinking about quad-core CPUs. And they’re not only thinking, but almost ready to launch them. Or at least Intel is.
Thus, the great Chipzilla announced that it expects to ship its first processor with four cores in early 2007 as the world's top chipmaker races to win back market share, according to Reuters.
Intel also expects to sell 60 million dual-core chips this year, accounting for about a quarter of total processor sales, chief technology officer Justin Rattner told reporters.
"Clearly the momentum around multi-core is building," Rattner said.
The new chip, called Clovertown, bundles four processors in a single package, allowing computers to process data more quickly or run more applications at the same time, while using less power than a single-core design.
Clovertown is aimed at server computers that run corporate networks and host Web sites on the Internet. It will be sold in servers with sockets for two processors, meaning the computers could have as many as eight cores for crunching data.
Rattner, who showed off a computer running two of the first four Clovertown chips produced, declined to say whether all four cores are on a single die, or if Clovertown would use two dual-core chips stuck together.
Multiplying the number of cores brings distinct advantages. First, it cuts down overall energy consumption for equivalent levels of performance. If the recent Core Duo chips released for notebooks from Intel had only one core, the chips would consume far more power, he said, according to CNETnews.com.
Integrating processor cores into the same piece of silicon or same processor package also increases performance by reducing the data pathways.
"To go from core to core can be a matter of nanoseconds," Rattner said. "As soon as you move cores together you get an automatic improvement in available bandwidth."
Nonetheless, adding cores requires careful planning. Energy efficiency, data input/output and memory latency (the time it takes data to go from memory and the processor and vice versa) will be major issues with each level of core expansion.......More! By Axxel of Playfuls.com, Romania
