Alonso championed the fisrt leg of Grand Prix F1 in Bahrain. F1 websited used New champion beats old in Bahrain reported:
2006 started where 2005 left off - with world champion Fernando Alonso taking another well-deserved victory in Bahrain after a well-judged race to the flag.
But when it came to the second step of the podium, the script differed dramatically from last season’s - with Michael Schumacher enjoying a dramatic return to form and bagging second after fighting Alonso all the way. Kimi Raikkonen put in another remarkable performance to end the race in third place, battling through the order from last place to secure six points at the flag.
Alonso’s race got off to a strong start when he powered his way from P4 to second place by the end of the first lap. It then became a battle of strategy between him and early front-runner Michael Schumacher, but the Spaniard emerged from his second and final stop barely a car length ahead of his rival’s Ferrari - holding the lead around Turn One and forcing Schumacher wide. The German kept pushing all the way to the end, but he couldn’t find his way past the Renault and had to settle for 8 points.
