Singapore's First Ever Swimming Gold

Tao Li a sports school's student won the first-ever gold for Singapore in Asian Swimming Championship. Congratulations!

The Asia Swimming Championships started in 1980 and Singapore have never struck gold in the competition.

How fitting then that the hoodoo was broken on Monday night on home soil, as Tao Li stormed to a win in the 50-metre butterfly at the 7th Milo Asia Swimming Championships, held at the Singapore Sports School.

And in a bonus for the hosts, Joscelin Yeo made it a one-two by grabbing the silver.

Tao Li clocked 26.92 seconds, Yeo touched home in 27.37 seconds, while China's Guo Fan took bronze 0.20 seconds behind the SEA Games superstar.

While Singapore's chances were boosted after China's top swimmer Wang Junyao was disqualified for jump-starting the gun during the morning's heats, Tao Li was ecstatic she had broken her previous record of 27.53 seconds.

"I am elated as I've never gone below 27 seconds before so this is a great breakthrough for me," said the 16-year-old, a student at the Sports School.
