Google engineers never stop enriching Gmail's functions, as you see in the above demo picture from About Gmail, when you hover the cursor over an email address, a portait of someone will pop up, this is a brand new feature that Goolge rolled out and what is called contact picutres.
With contact pictures in Gmail, you can pick ones for yourself, see which ones your friends have chosen, and set certain pictures to show up for specific people in your Gmail account. Best of all, you can even send picture suggestions to your friends.This feature currently is not available to all Gmail users (including myself in Southeast Asia), but obviously Googler endeavors to make it,
We're in the process of rolling this feature out to all users, so keep an eye out for it in your account!Other updates include Gmail Chats is now useful in 17 more languages and whenever conversating with his/her friend in this chat, someone will be alerted by a "ping" sound (just like Google Talk). So you can work in other windows or even sit back and watch some TV without worrying about missing a message from your friend.
