A Young man died when the battery in his cell phone exploded in Jinta County of northwest China's Gansu Province, according to local public security authority.
The accident occurred at noon on June 19, when welder Xiao Jinpeng was working at the Yingpan Iron Ore Dressing Plant.
The cell phone, a genuine Motorola, in his chest pocket suddenly exploded and Xiao, 22, died at a local hospital after emergency treatment failed, said Bai Shixiong, commissar at Jinta County's public security bureau.
The initial investigation showed the phone battery exploded after being exposed to a high temperature, breaking Xiao's ribs which penetrated his heart.
"We haven't ruled out the possibility that quality problems with the battery induced the tragedy, but other causes remain possible," said Bai.
Local police and work safety officers are still trying to ascertain the model of the phone and battery, and whether they had any quality problems.
Many Chinese handset users, who are familiar with fake or low-quality accessories, are demanding an immediate reply from relative departments and Motorola on whether the explosion was caused by battery defects or improper use of the phone.
The local work safety administration temporarily recorded Xiao's death as a work safety accident as the explosion occurred at the workplace in Jinta, about 800 kilometers from the provincial capital, Lanzhou.
The plant had paid 135,000 yuan (US$17,763) in compensation to Xiao's family, said his mother, who lost her husband in a road accident in 2005.
A team from Motorola is expected to arrive at the site to help with the probe.
Exploding cell phone batteries are very rare, said Yang Boning, public relations chief at Motorola's China branch, according to yesterday's Lanzhou Morning Daily.
Yang said Motorola was taking the incident very seriously and would respect the results of the investigation.
