Highway Bridge Collapses After Being Hit by Boat

collapsed jiujiang bridgeA section of the Jiujiang Bridge over the Xijiang River in Guangdong Province is seen collapsed after being hit by a boat laden with sand on June 15, 2007. The boat hit a pier of the bridge built in 1988 connecting Foshan to the neighbor city of Heshan, and at least 150 meters of the 1,600-metre bridge structure collapsed.

Two of the boat's ten crew members rescued were injured and had been sent to hospital, while two workers working on the bridge have disappeared.

The boat should not have hit the bridge if it followed the navigation markers. The area had seen several heavy rainfalls recently aand the higher and faster water levels may have contributed to the accident.

Video footage from a nearby toll station shows about 130 vehicles crossing the bridge between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., six of them have lost contacts with the concerned authorities, prompting they have vanished in the river.

It was learned that it needs to take half an year to repair the collapsed bridge section.
