Guam’s major grocery stores have pulled two frozen pizza brands from their shelves – Totino’s and Jeno’s – after their parent company, General Mills, issued a voluntary recall of about 5 million pizzas sold in the U.S. on November 1.
The pizzas were recalled because authorities investigating 21 occurrences of E. Coli O157:H7-related illnesses between July 20 and Oct. 10 reported that nine of the sick people had eaten a Totino’s or Jeno’s pizza before becoming ill.
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. its symptoms can also include stomach cramps. The infected people are typically ill for two to five days but can develop serious complications, including kidney failure. The young, the old and the chronically ill are more susceptible to infection.
The recall includes eight SKUs (stock keeping units or UPC codes) of Totino’s brand frozen pizza and three SKUs of Jeno’s brand frozen pizza with pepperoni topping, or incorporating pepperoni in combination with other toppings.
